Drawing & Shading Workshop

8/3/2015

Today was the first of my Drawing and Shading workshops at The Cloud 9 Gallery in Bacup, UK.  I started off by demonstrating the different shading techniques and ways in which you can hold a pencil in order to achieve different effects, then i went on to show a couple of different way of going about sketching the outline of an image before starting our main piece.  We used the grid system in order to draw our image and then used the techniques we had learned earlier to start shading.  As it is a time consuming media we didn't have time to finish our drawings but the work that was done was outstanding and everyone was keen to carry on their drawings at home!  I can't wait to see the finished pieces!

Another Place

Alex's photographs "Look out" and my painting "Another Place", Oil on box canvas, 24” x 12” (1” Depth), 2015.
I chose to paint this image as i had just visited Antony Gormley's "Another Place " myself, so i had a connection with it already and Alex's photographs really captured the emotions i felt whilst i was there.  For this canvas i combined two photographs.  I loved the colours in the sky and reflections in the water of the top image but i just loved the composition of the second photograph.  I think the two have really worked well to make a whole complete painting capturing the mood of "Another Place"

Another Place is a piece of modern sculpture by Antony Gormley on Crosby Beach, Liverpool, UK.  It consists of 100 cast iron sculptures of the artist's own body, facing towards the sea, spread out on a 2 mile stretch of beach.  In common with most of Gormley's work, the figures are cast replicas of his own body.  As the tides ebb and flow, the figures are revealed and submerged by the sea, in order to harness and explore man's relationship with nature.

Storytime

Storytime was part of the colored pencil magazines challenge for this month and what a task!  All that texture and detail took quite a while!  I couldn't resist the cute image though especially as i haven't been feeling well recently, it was the perfect tonic!

"Self Portrait", Polychromos pencils on Strathmore Bristol smooth paper, 9" x 12"
After drawing the Snow Baby artwork i just couldn't get the idea of doing a self portrait out of my head!

So here it is!  This is me in pencil form!  It was very weird looking at myself for hours on end!  There were times when i forgot who i was drawing and periods when it didn't even look like me because i was so drawn in to the different areas, it was all a blur to me!

Now i step back and stop fiddling with little bits (I could have gone on forever), i am really happy with the likeness and my first successful self portrait!

Workshop

Todays acrylic workshop at the Cloud 9 Gallery produced some amazing pantings!  This time we were painting one of Alex Taylor's photographs taken at Whitby and Alex also joined in and created his first ever painting, which looks fab!

In Previous classes we hadn't painted a really dramatic sky or water and this photograph worked well with the contrast of textures from a highly textured bright fiery sky to a smooth, tranquil, cool sea.  It ended up being quite challenging and all of our paintings changed dramatically over the course the afternoon!  The results are outstanding!   Well done Alex and Beverley!

This is "Fiery Sky", Acrylic on A4 Canvas.

I am delighted to say that i am introducing two brand new workshops to 2015!  Following on from the popular Introduction to acrylic painting workshops, i am now running an advanced painting workshop for those who would like to develop their skills further with new techniques and more challenging subjects to paint!  I am also offering drawing and shading workshops for those who would like to learn how to draw or would like to develop their own drawing style.  We will be drawing and shading with graphite and coloured pencils and creating a lovely drawing to take home.

To join in with the fun take a look at my workshop page to see how to book!

Beddgelert

Beddgelert is my newly finished oil painting on canvas.

Inspiration came from one of my own photographs taken whilst staying on holiday in the little picturesque village of Beddgelert in 2013.

Beddgelert  is a village in the Snowdonia area of Gwynedd, North Wales.  The old stone bridge with it's two arches stands in the centre of the village and crosses the River Colwyn.

The little village was thriving with visitors the day i took the photo!  Most of them queuing up for ice cream at the fantastic ice cream shop with it's many flavours!  Yes, we did visit once or twice whilst we were there! :)

Painting this scene really took me back there, i can hear the sounds of the river water, birds tweeting, and of course the chatter of the people as they decide on which ice cream to have!
