Another Place

Alex's photographs "Look out" and my painting "Another Place", Oil on box canvas, 24” x 12” (1” Depth), 2015.
I chose to paint this image as i had just visited Antony Gormley's "Another Place " myself, so i had a connection with it already and Alex's photographs really captured the emotions i felt whilst i was there.  For this canvas i combined two photographs.  I loved the colours in the sky and reflections in the water of the top image but i just loved the composition of the second photograph.  I think the two have really worked well to make a whole complete painting capturing the mood of "Another Place"

Another Place is a piece of modern sculpture by Antony Gormley on Crosby Beach, Liverpool, UK.  It consists of 100 cast iron sculptures of the artist's own body, facing towards the sea, spread out on a 2 mile stretch of beach.  In common with most of Gormley's work, the figures are cast replicas of his own body.  As the tides ebb and flow, the figures are revealed and submerged by the sea, in order to harness and explore man's relationship with nature.

Beddgelert

Beddgelert is my newly finished oil painting on canvas.

Inspiration came from one of my own photographs taken whilst staying on holiday in the little picturesque village of Beddgelert in 2013.

Beddgelert  is a village in the Snowdonia area of Gwynedd, North Wales.  The old stone bridge with it's two arches stands in the centre of the village and crosses the River Colwyn.

The little village was thriving with visitors the day i took the photo!  Most of them queuing up for ice cream at the fantastic ice cream shop with it's many flavours!  Yes, we did visit once or twice whilst we were there! :)

Painting this scene really took me back there, i can hear the sounds of the river water, birds tweeting, and of course the chatter of the people as they decide on which ice cream to have!

The Red Barn

Here is my last finished painting for 2014 "The Red Barn" based on Alex's photograph!  I was drawn to this image as it holds a lovely variation of textures due to the depth of field and i just loved the rustic texture of the barn and wall against the fields. I think the different techniques i have used really work to achieve that depth in the picture and i even got a bit of pointillism in there too! What was amazing as i worked was all the colours popping out at me in all the green. I think they really work well together and add a liveliness to it!

Now just for Alex I decided to add in a friend for the white sheep! It's the little black sheep which wouldn't move into frame on his photo shoot!

Have a great Christmas and a Happy New Year!  See you all in 2015! x

Adding the finishing touches, you can really see how impasto the paint is here.

Here is my latest finished painting "Autumn Falls".  Oil on canvas 16" x 20".

Autumn is my favourite season as there are lot's of different textures and vivid colours to inspire me.  It's such an exciting time of year as every day reveals new jewels of colours.

These waterfalls are located at Hardcastle Crags at Hebden Bridge in Yorkshire.

This is my version of a photograph taken by Alex Taylor which he has kindly given me permission to use as reference.  You can see Alex's original photograph here of which my painting is based:

Here is my latest finished painting "Wainhouse Moon".  Oil on canvas 16" x 20".

Wainhouse Tower is a fabulously ornate Victorian chimney on the south west side of Halifax, Calderdale, West Yorkshire, in England.  It opened in 1875, is 77 metres (253 feet) high and is the product of architect Isaac Booth.

You can pay the tower a visit, climb the internal spiral staircase and take in the fantastic view.

This is my version of a photograph taken by Alex Taylor which he has kindly given me permission to use as reference.  You can see Alex's original photograph here of which my painting is based:

Angel Of The North

My painting "Angel Of The North"  is finished!  Here it is! Oil on canvas 16" x 20".  I loved putting those rays of sunlight in today using a lovely soft glaze!

For those who don't know any of the background of the Angel here are a few interesting facts!

The Angel of the North is a contemporary sculpture, designed by Antony Gormley, which is located in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, England.

It is a steel sculpture of an angel, 20 metres (66 ft) tall, with wings measuring 54 metres (177 ft) across.  The wings do not stand straight sideways, but are angled 3.5 degrees forward. This is to create "a sense of embrace".

The significance of the angel was firstly, to signify that beneath the site of its construction, coal miners worked for two centuries.  Second, to grasp the transition from an industrial to information age, and thirdly, to serve as a focus for our evolving hopes and fears.

Angel Of The North will be available to buy as soon as the paint is dry!

After the madness of getting everything ready for the art market last week, i finally got back to my oil painting today!  There is definitely more life to it now!  It's got to that stage though where i have to make the big decision, do i leave it there or do i add more! I'm leaning more towards the latter at the moment, but i'll leave it  there for now and see if i still feel the same in a few days time!
